Seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was behind attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
